The Glocal Debate with Matt Golding
Most people feel governments are failing us. That much feels clear. But when it comes to building the world we actually want – does change start in our neighbourhoods? Does it need to move through national and international systems too?
Rupert will be chairing a live conversation on June 4th with Matt Golding, co-host and creator of the acclaimed podcast “Screw This, Let’s Try Something Else” – a UK road trip through communities who got fed up waiting for permission and started building the future themselves. From Bristol’s community-owned wind turbine to a Shropshire farm with 8,000 community landlords, the podcast — co-hosted with Maryam Pasha and described by Brian Eno as “a podcast of hope filled stories that could genuinely change the world” — shows what’s possible when ordinary people act together.
We are huge admirers of Matt’s work, and we showcase it and some of the key examples that it in turn showcases.
But The Climate Majority Project wants to push further. In this session we’ll explore the creative tensions between grassroots action and systemic change:
• Does local resilience building need to include climate messaging?
• Should climate truth come after people have undertaken local action — or before? Or during?
• What is the role of politics in systems change?
• Can change at scale ever be truly bottom-up?
• How do we achieve real transformation in a partly corrupt political landscape?
Expect honest dialogue, not easy answers. Come ready to think — and agree, and disagree.
Featuring insights from the podcast’s 2025 season, including Jon Alexander on the five steps to becoming an engaged citizen, and initiatives like Civic Square with Immy Kaur and Kate Raworth.
