What the Government isn’t saying about climate risk
I want to draw your attention to something that really matters.
As you may have seen, the UK Government has recently and very quietly published a National Security Assessment on Global Biodiversity Loss, Ecosystem Collapse and National Security. This is not a campaign document. It is a government-commissioned assessment, and it is the starkest official warning yet about the threat that climate and ecological breakdown pose to our national security.
This is huge news.
The report warns of severe and cascading risks – to food systems, social stability, migration pressures and economic security. Yet it was released with no announcement, at a moment of international distraction, and in a form that is clearly incomplete. What has been published appears to be only the preliminary findings of a much larger piece of work. Key details, regional analyses and explanations are missing.
In other words, we are being left in the dark about the full scale of the danger – and about what we may need to adapt to in order to protect ourselves and our communities.
I wrote about this in the Eastern Daily Press, and I have also set out my concerns in more detail on Substack. The Government has so far said nothing. That silence matters.
I believe we must continue to press for the full report to be released. Please consider writing to your MP and urging them to demand transparency around the Nature Security Assessment on Global Biodiversity Loss, Ecosystem Collapse and National Security. This is information the public has a right to see.
Alongside this, I want to share some more hopeful news.
The Climate Majority Project has just launched Climate Courage Schools – a new initiative to support educators who are grappling with how to teach honestly about climate breakdown while also supporting young people’s emotional wellbeing. Schools can be places of truth, resilience and collective purpose, but teachers are often left to carry this burden alone. This project aims to change that.
We are currently raising funds to turn Climate Courage Schools into a permanent, national resource. If you are able to support it – by donating or simply by sharing the project – that would make a real difference.
Finally, for those interested in exploring some of the deeper cultural and spiritual dimensions of this moment, I’ll be taking part in an upcoming event at Hawkwood College, World as Lover, World as Self. It’s a space for reflection on how we relate to the living world at a time of profound disruption.
Thank you, as always, for reading, for caring, and for everything you do.
