SAFER campaign launch
I wanted to send a quick note to share some reflections after last week’s SAFER campaign launch at University College London.
I’m truly heartened by the energy in the room and by how many of you joined us in person. SAFER – Strategic Adaptation for Emergencies and Resilience – is something I’ve been working towards for some time, alongside allies like Caroline Lucas. We’re calling for a serious, joined-up national plan to prepare for climate shocks and protect lives and livelihoods.
It’s about protecting people now, not just in the distant future. And there’s so much hope here, because if the public and politicians back it, we really can make the UK safer, fairer, and more resilient.
If you haven’t yet, please sign and share our new petition – it’s calling for government funding for a proper climate resilience plan, gathering over 1,500 signatures in the first 48 hours (now close to 3000), with support from people like Chris Packham and George Monbiot. Please sign and share the petition to help us reach 10,000 signatures and beyond.
Alongside this, Caroline Lucas and I have co-written a piece for Byline Supplement, setting out the case for SAFER and why we believe strategic adaptation is urgent. I’ve also written for the Eastern Daily Press about what this means for places like East Anglia, where sea-level rise and extreme weather are already affecting communities.
Transformative Adaptation
Finally, I’m excited to share that my book, Transformative Adaptation, is now selling through Penguin. It’s all about how we can rise to meet the crises we face – not with despair, but with courage, action, and fairness at the core.
Thank you, as ever, for your support. Let’s keep pushing together for the change that’s needed – because there is still so much that’s possible if we act wisely and boldly now.
