Flood-prevention and warning systems

If the recent bursts of heat followed by rumbling thunderstorms have felt unsettling, you’re not alone. More and more, the weather is reminding us that we’re living in changed – and changing – times. The awful flooding in Texas is a massive testimony to this. And it’s particularly relevant to the theme of this newsletter that, in Texas, vital flood-prevention and warning systems have recently been damaged or even dismantled. This is a powerful testimony to what happens when resilience is ignored – and why it’s urgent we get serious about it, here in the UK and beyond.

But with change and horror comes the chance to respond powerfully – and that’s what much of this newsletter is about.

You’re invited: SAFER Launch (with Caroline Lucas)

Wednesday 9 July, 4pm, University College of London

We’re proud to announce the launch of SAFER (Society for A Future of Environmental Resilience) – a bold new initiative that the Climate Majority Project has been steadily building toward. And you’re invited!

Joining me will be Caroline Lucas – longtime Green MP and fellow advocate for a more just and resilient future. This in-person evening will explore what SAFER is all about: rethinking infrastructure, preparing for shocks, and building the real resilience communities need.

Two important companion pieces dive into the themes behind SAFER and the UK’s new infrastructure plan – including a powerful joint article by me and Caroline:

Inner Climate Response Alliance (ICRA) gets National Lottery funding!

We’re thrilled to share that Inner Climate Response Allicance, which focuses on the inner and emotional aspects of climate engagement/adaptation, has been awarded support from the National Lottery Community Fund.

The Climate Majority Project’s Climate Courage Schools pilot has launched! It’s helping young people connect with the climate crisis in honest, emotionally engaged ways. Watch the short launch file and learn more on the Climate Majority Project website.

A retreat for those ready to act: The Edge

In November, I will be special guest and facilitator at The Edge, a 4-day retreat in Hertfordshire. If you’re feeling called to step up your climate engagement – or to do so in a way that’s personally grounded, reflective and resilient – this might be for you.

This connects directly with the deeper emotional foundations being laid by Inner Climate Response Allicance and the Climate Courage Campaign. A culture shift begins with people finding new clarity – and courage – together.

Help us spread the word

If any of this resonates with you – the SAFER launch, the courage campaign, the deeper emotional work or the invitation to retreat and reflect – please share these links with your friends, networks and communities.

Together, we’re helping shape the kind of future we can still believe in.
